Venford Reservoir Loop
This was supposed to be a gentle summers day stroll, however the weather did not get the memo.
Venford is a hidden gem, sat amongst the grassy moorland is a beautiful woodland wrapping around one of Dartmoor National Park’s smallest waters. I always enjoy being stood on the dam above the reservoir with views over the rich green woodland surrounded by the rugged wilderness of the moor. The mixture of the 3 landscapes blending into one scene is just incredible.
The 1.5km circular walk here is easy and peaceful, the parking is good and there is a well trodden dirt path leading around the reservoir. If you do visit in the winter or after rainfall it can get a little muddy especially towards the south west of the trail. The circular walk isn’t the only route at Venford in fact this is the location of one of the best adventures on Dartmoor, most commonly known as The Secret Waterfall. Okay it’s not so much a secret anymore but it’s still an awesome adventure. To start the search for the waterfall you’ll need leave the carpark heading away from the reservoir heading north and hug the Venford Brook which runs from the reservoir and joins the River Dart.
Unfortunately we weren’t heading off in search of the waterfall today instead we set off on the circular walk hoping to complete the loop before the dark clouds decided to release the rain. This is of course Dartmoor so we were unsuccessful but grateful for the cover offered by the trees. All the way along the trail are different vantage points offering incredible views of of landscape and stunning reflection in the calm water. There is even a small beach and a cute little wooden bridge over a small stream.
If you’re new to Dartmoor National Park or you’re looking for an easy adventure then Venford Reservoir is perfect. It’s not too far, good parking and it’s not too strenuous.
Location: Venford Reservoir.
Car Park Postcode (Nearest): TQ13 7SS / Free Parking.
If you’re heading here from the A38 it’s easiest to exit at Ashburton and head west towards Holne, past the River Dart Country Park. Continue until you reach a fork in the road and take the left, this then climbs to Holne and into the moorland which leads you to the reservoir. These country roads aren’t all named so try and use the postcode which will get you close to the reservoir, you’ll pass a small car park on the right hand side before then driving across the dam lined with beautiful stone walls as you being to climb a hill just after the reservoir the main car park is on your right hand side.
